Best snack in town!

Hands down the best snack on store shelves right now is Tong Garden's Sunflower seeds. Problem is they're always out of stock!

They used to be available only in Thailand but, now, you can buy them in Manila at SM Hypermart for Php24.95 or at Unimart for Php16.95.

The plain, salted ones are the best, mainly because they're MSG-free.

The Philippine distributor, Dranix Distributors Inc., is based in Cebu but, occasionally, exhibits in Manila food expos.

The next time I see them on the shelves, I'm buying six months' worth; which is how long it takes them to restock this delicious snack!

ATTENTION: DRANIX! Deliver to Unimart more often, will you? If I become desperate enough, I'll probably hotfoot it over to your warehouse in Manggahan, Pasig.

The First Wives Club for the aughties!

The chick flick The First Wives Club, starring Goldie Hawn, Bette Middler, and Diane Keaton, rocked the late-90s. It was made for US$26M and has since grossed US$5.4B.

The new movie The Other Woman, which opens in Philippine theaters on May 7, will remind you of the late-90s juggernaut, sans the comedic genius of Hawn.

You would think that Kate Upton would be the Goldie-Hawn type, but it is Leslie Mann who appears closest to achieving Hawn's comedic stature, slapstick and all.

Mann, of George of the Jungle fame, upstages an aging Cameron Diaz by turning even unfunny dialog into rip-roaring scenes.

Speaking of Diaz, does anyone notice how she keeps looking more like Ellen Barkin with every film? Her tryst with Justin Timbelake makes it appear that she's headed for cougar-ville too, just like Barkin.

Kate Upton, who obviously lost weight to not look pudgy beside her uber-thin co-stars turns in an okay, if under written, performance. And Taylor Kinney, Lady Gaga's latest squeeze, provides the hot man candy along with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau of Game of Thrones. Nicki Minaj and '80s icon Don Johnson also star.

I'm betting on The Other Woman to make lots of moolah by word of mouth. The whole theater rocked with laughter, especially during Mann's scenes.

You'd think this being a chick flick that guys wouldn't enjoy, right? Well, let me tell you, most of the guffaws came from men.

Definitely worth the price of admission, popcorn, and a Coke. Guaranteed to keep you laughing for most of the 100+ minutes whether you watch with your gal pals or your S.O.

Why has no one noticed this grammatical error on the Sprite can? Coca-Cola peeps, do you outsource your grammar as well? I count everything but calories—sadly, all calories count!

Compare the price on the receipt to the price
on the promotional standee. Note that the date
of purchase is still within the promo period.

Beware of merchants who display one price but charge another!

They display a discounted price but what appears on the register when the cashier swipes your item is the regular price.

Stores often display promotional signs trumpeting great bargains. I'm sure many products end up in our shopping carts simply because of those signs.

But did you know that they could be charging you regular price for something that you thought you were getting at a discount?

Merchants often misrepresent how much they charge customers. I know because it has happened to me twice. I suspect it happens more often than that—but how many of us remember the display price of the things in our cart?

I recently bought my favorite Watsons item. Take a look at the price on the promotional sign: Buy 1, Take 1 for Php89.

Now take a look at the cash register receipt. I was charged Php109. Rather, they were trying to charge me that. A difference of Php20.

The cashier tried to fix the problem as shown by the cancellations (minus signs). She even disappeared for five minutes (at the end of a long, hot day!) to ask her supervisor about the obvious mistake.

Would you believe she came back and still tried to charge me Php109 for a product that was labeled Php89?

She finally gave up, seeing that I wouldn't budge and the place was closing. I hope she didn't have to shell out the difference, because I got a receipt that read Php109 even after I paid only Php89.

By the way, the other time I discovered a similar mistake was at Savemore Berkeley on Katipunan. I hope this isn't a common occurrence at SM stores!

It surprises me that so many Manilans have not yet heard of SmartPhoneMate. Or maybe Manilans are just so jaded that they think this app is too good to be true: Free prepaid load or Groupon coupons each month? No way, right? Way.
The catch? You have to install a research app that will log your smartphone behavior. That’s the reason I only use it on a backup phone. To be fair to SmartPhoneMate, they have not done anything to cause my phone to lag or change in any way.

It used to be that you could just keep the app running in the background on the rare occasions you stumble onto free Wi-Fi around the metro. That’s how I got around Php100 worth of free load last year on each of my two Sun phones during the same month. (Yes, sadly, I have two Sun numbers–and two Smart numbers spread across multiple gadgets. No Globe. Yet.)

But the SmartPhoneMate guys have caught up with tech-savvy Filipinos and are now stricter. Here are their terms and conditions. Check out numbers 2 and 7.

1. You need to have active GPRS/data plan throughout the participation period.
